CrashPlan: Unable to connect to the backup engine

  1. Make sure both Windows and QNAP components are at the same version. e.g. 3.6.3 (May 2014).
  2. Make sure the entry: serviceHost={QNAP IP Address} has correct IP and is uncommented (no # at the beginning of the line). Located in: “C:\Program Files\CrashPlan\conf\”.
  3. SSH to QNAP
  4. Enter the command:

    # ps –ef | grep java

  5. Should return:

    /usr/local/jre/bin/java -Dfile.encoding=UTF-8 -Dapp=CrashPlanService -DappBaseName=CrashPlan -Xms20m -Xmx1024m

  6. If not,

    # cd /share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/.qpkg/JRE

    # ./

This should restart crashplan, confirmed by running first command.

  7. Confirm services are listening on available ports:

    # netstat -an

    tcp 0 0* LISTEN

    tcp 0 0* LISTEND

  8. Telnet from Windows to QNAP on ports to confirm connectivity:

    C:\> telnet {QNAP IP Address} 4242

    C:\> telnet {QNAP IP Address} 4243
