Varonis DatAnywhere: Cannot ‘see’ stub files in %USERPROFILE%\Documents in Windows 10

The below is a copy of a post that I’ve made on Varonis’s community that requires login.

Hi,

In my setup I cannot seem to get the DatAnywhere client folders to replace the Windows profile folders. In other words, the user will have to remember to save to the %USERPROFILE%\DatAnywhere folder, which I know won’t happen.

 

Taking a typical client and user (running Win10 Enterprise) I have the following DatAnywhere

 

On a typical Windows client the “standard” profile contains the following locations:

%USERPROFILE%\Documents

%USERPROFILE%\Music

%USERPROFILE%\Videos

%USERPROFILE%\Pictures

 

With DataAnywhere, I also have:

%USERPROFILE%\DatAnywhere\someuser_private_workspace\someuser (fileserver*)\

%USERPROFILE%\DatAnywhere\ShareMusicWorkspace\Music\

%USERPROFILE%\DatAnywhere\ShareVideosWorkspace\Videos\

%USERPROFILE%\DatAnywhere\SharePicturesWorkspace\Pictures\

 

* How do I remove the fileserver name from the path?

 

I want to “map” / “replace” / “redirect” the standard locations with the equivalent DatAnywhere locations.

 

I have tried:

  1. Loading the user’s NTUSER.DAT hive and modifying the values in “HKEY_CURRENT_USERS\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders”
    • Personal = %USERPROFILE%\DatAnywhere\%USERNAME%_private_workspace\%USERNAME% (fileserver)\Documents
    • Music = %USERPROFILE%\DatAnywhere\SharedMusic\Music
    • Videos = %USERPROFILE%\DatAnywhere\SharedVideos\Videos
    • Pictures = %USERPROFILE%\DatAnywhere\SharedPictures\Shared

 

  1. Modifying the values in “HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders” as above, deleting and recreating the user profile.
  2. Made sure the DatAnywhere Client is installed and the folders are synced before apply the above registry settings using Group Policy Preferences.
  3. In the DatAnywhere client, change the “Local DatAnywhere folder” from %USERPROFILE%\DatAnywhere to %USERPROFILE% but the client errors saying the directory must be empty.

 

I can see the registry keys have changed but they do not apply. Can anyone tell me how they do achieve this? I’m kind of running out of ideas. So far DatAnywhere looks perfect, but this is a deal breaker.

So, after much testing, I have found I can redirect %USERPROFILE%\Documents to %USERPROFILE%\DatAnywhere… but only in Windows 7. The problem I am experiencing only manifests itself on Windows 10. In short the issue is that Windows 10 doesn’t show the stub files when accessing “Documents” from “This PC”. Only files that have been sync’d and therefore a local copy on the client show.

 

I have built two vanilla VM’s, 1x Win7 and 1x Win10 from MS source ISO. Both are joined to the domain, sittings in an OU with inheritance blocked – to make sure there is nothing in a GPO causing the problem.

 

Out the box, “This PC” window contains 6 folders all located in C:\User\aUser\ (aka %USERPROFILE%):

  • Desktop
  • Downloads
  • Pictures
  • Documents
  • Music
  • Videos.

 

To “redirect” Documents:

  1. Right-click and select Properties,
  2. Click Location tab,
  3. Click Move
  4. Navigate to: C:\Users\{aUser}\DatAnywhere\User_Workspace_Private\{aUser} ({aServer})\Documents,
  5. Click Select Folder,
  6. Click Ok,
  7. Click No to “Do you want to move all of the files from the old location to the new location?”,
  8. Click Ok.

Now the “Documents” folder has a green tick icon overlay:

 

I now have the following “routes” to take when navigating to Documents:

  • Route 1 = “This PC” > C:\Users\{aUser}\DatAnywhere\User_Workspace_Private\{aUser} ({aServer})\Documents
  • Route 2 = “This PC” > Folders > Documents
  • Route 3 = “This PC” > Quick Access > Documents
  • Route 4 = “This PC” > Libraries > Documents (Libraries or switched off in Windows 10 by default).

 

If I take Route 1, I can see all the files with the “stub” icon overlay, however, if I open the “Documents” from any other route, the Documents folder is empty.

 

The redirection means that I should end up in the same place, but the problem is that it doesn’t show any stub if open the folder from “This PC”. I get the same result if I use the new Quick Access menu or Libraries.

 

If I take Route 1, and select “ Sync entire file (available for offline use)” from the DatAnywhere context menu, and take any route, the file is there.

 

I’ve also noticed that if I make any file in a folder available offline, I cannot access the folder (in this case, MyProjects):

If I return the files to a stub only (delete local copy), as soon as I close and reopen or refresh the “This PC” window, the files disappear.

 

 

In DatAnywhere_Errors.log I see:

2016-04-11 00:54:53,284 [ChangeProcessor ThreadPool worker 1] ERROR Varonis.Scf.Client.Sync.ChangeProcessing.WatcherChangeProcessor – WatcherChangeProcessor.RestoreSubFoldersAndFiles(): Failed to get Change Row for folder = ItemID = ‘302’, ItemType = ‘Folder’

 

System.Net.WebException: The remote server returned an error: (500) Internal Server Error.

at DynamicModule.ns.Wrapped_IRestClient_22451d05bfea4ae1816d26692aa65925.GetItemHistoryChangeRow(String itemId, UInt64 rootId, ItemType itemType, UInt64 revision)

at Varonis.Scf.Client.Sync.ChangeProcessing.WatcherChangeProcessor.RestoreSubFoldersAndFiles(IFolderMetadata folderMetadata, Nullable`1 rootId)

 

There are no other errors on the client.

 

My thought is that MS have changed something in Windows 10, adding a “feature” or Varonis are yet to accommodate the change.

 

Anyone from Varonis care to comment please?

I raised a support ticket for this issue. As we are trialling it to make sure DatAnywhere will work, they closed the ticket, but what I was told is that Windows 10 is not supported. (sigh). When will it be Varonis?

 

I’ve now posted on the Windows 10 Technet forum, here,  in the hope someone will know what has changed in Windows 10 and lead to a resolution.

      “Supported”, perhaps, but it still doesn’t work, as of version 3.1.0.77. Stub filed do not show when access “Documents” from this PC.

        May be, but now you can reopen he ticket and the won’t tell you that Windows 10 not supported 🙂
